UN’s Sustainable Development Goals:
This program is ideal for
Compassionate individuals committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment in secondary schools. Volunteers should possess empathy, patience, and a passion for education. They should value diversity, promote non-violent conflict resolution, and be eager to empower young people to become active, responsible citizens through creative and engaging activities.
Education in preventing conflicts and violent extremism requires the promotion and nurturing from an early age with a combination of values. This approach also supports building stronger, more effective national and global citizens with skills and competencies that can be harnessed for positive change. These include competencies of civic responsibility and civic engagement. Involving students in their own educational processes, and encouraging peer learning opportunities also support building more resilient students and constructive classrooms. This may mean providing opportunities for students to think creatively on how they can take action and contribute to positive change in their communities in a constructive and non-violent way, or for addressing differences and disagreements through a peaceful lens rather than conflict.
Therefore, there is a need to curb violent extremism by establishing peace clubs with the aim of creating awareness among students, teachers and community members on the patterns, and trends extremist groups use for recruitment and radicalisation of young people. These peace clubs could initiate extra-curricular activities such as sports, arts, culture programs which can also be leveraged to incorporate resilience-building measures that are also part of the formal education system. As an illustration, coaches can be taught social and emotional learning strategies applicable in the informal setting of teaching a sport, which is naturally more interactive. Culture and arts programs can emphasize diversity and respect for others, while cultivating knowledge about subjects that are supplemental to what is being taught in schools.
[The best time to come would be between February - November. Yes, some activities are project specific such as the Youth Peace Camp and the Skill Acquisition and Economic Empowerment programme. However, with skill acquisition programmes volunteers can work with people who we have already trained who have established their businesses and are training others.]
