Our mission at Tortugas de Pacuare is to protect these endangered species with the support of local communities and international volunteers, all while championing environmental conservation.

Turtle Seasons:

  • Leatherback season (last week of February to end of June)
  • Green turtle season (July to September)
  • Hawksbill season (April to August)

Remember, wildlife is unpredictable, but one thing is certain—Mother Nature never ceases to amaze us. That's why we love saving turtles!

Working with Turtles:

Participating in our turtle conservation program means you'll engage in night patrols on the beach with local guides and fellow volunteers. Collect turtle eggs and relocate them to a turtle hatchery, providing them with safety from poachers. Additionally, you'll work at the hatchery, ensuring that the turtle eggs and freshly hatched turtles are well-prepared for their perilous journey back into the sea.

About the Leatherback Turtle:

Leatherbacks are the largest turtles on Earth, reaching up to seven feet in length and weighing over 2,000 pounds. These ancient creatures are the last representatives of a turtle family with a history spanning over 100 million years. Their unique, flexible carapace makes them more vulnerable to predators and poachers. Your efforts can help protect them.

The Green Sea Turtle:

Green turtles, weighing up to 700 pounds, are among the world's largest sea turtles. Despite their name, it's their skin that's greenish, not their shells. The Eastern Pacific green turtle has a unique habit of basking on land, exposing them to predators and poachers. Your support can make a significant difference in their survival.

Communal Work:

Our volunteer program extends beyond turtle conservation. You'll also engage in communal work, maintaining our camp and participating in our recycling program. We dedicate time to community service, assisting with local facilities, schools, and sports fields, and organizing beach cleanups in partnership with the Blue Flag committee. Additionally, you'll contribute to building gardens and promoting community growth.

Our program is a true community initiative, and we work closely with the people of Barra de Pacuare. You'll gain valuable insights into our culture, and in return, enjoy fishing tours, kayaking, and boat tours to Tortuguero National Park. Join us to make a lasting impact and experience the beauty of Costa Rica.
