This program is ideal for

Volunteers who are fond of the elderly, believe that they can teach us a lot, and love spending quality time with them peacefully. You may have to step outside your comfort zone, or rather your generation-zone and be patient and attentive to their needs. As your tasks will vary based on various factors, you should be open to helping out in any kind of activity that is prioritised while you’re there.

When the Elderly/Frail Care Center first opened its doors in 1959, it provided just basic housing for the elderly (who could take care of themselves) and no further services. However, this was altered in 1994 when Apartheid was formally ended and a new administration took office. The new government wanted to stop institutionalizing the elderly, so this home and many others like it changed their name to frail care centers. This means that they now offer more services than just housing, including three nutritious meals a day, daily cleaning and laundry services, weekly trips to the grocery store, and 24-hour nursing care. Recent additions to the program include physiotherapy sessions intending to eventually rehabilitate the elderly to the point where they can assist themselves with the majority of daily duties.

There are approximately 70 residents in the facility, ranging in age from 45 to 90 years. Several of the present residents require ongoing care and have a variety of illnesses that make it impossible for them to live independently, including Huntington's disease, diabetes, various cancers, hypertension, schizophrenia 4, dementia, peripheral vascular disease, and Korzikoff syndrome. Most of these people would be left alone and unsupervised without our frail care facility. Volunteers (both local and foreign) are always more than welcome to help in any manner possible due to the extremely limited personnel.
