Are you passionate about wildlife and conservation? The Ara Reserve's Wildlife Guardians Program in Costa Rica provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to contribute to the preservation of native, wild macaws and their natural habitat. Our program, established in 1994, is driven by a deep admiration for these iconic birds and a commitment to address the ongoing threats they face, including habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.
Why Volunteer with Us:
The Macaw Reserve has a vital mission: to conserve the native, wild macaws of Costa Rica. We operate a comprehensive captive management and breeding program aimed at rescuing, rehabilitating, and reintroducing macaws into their natural environment. We work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), the National Police, and dedicated volunteers from civil society. In addition to macaw conservation, the Reserve actively promotes reforestation efforts, environmental education, and ecotourism initiatives.
Recognition and Significance:
Our commitment to conservation and education has not gone unnoticed. In July 2015, the Central Municipality of Puntarenas officially declared the Ara Reserve a place of educational, scientific, and touristic interest, highlighting the impact and importance of our work.
What to Bring as a Volunteer:
To make the most of your experience at the Ara Reserve, here's what you'll need:
