Community Farm Assistant

You will have a hands-on approach and be involved in duties like weeding, maintaining the land, fetching water from nearby streams, laying seeds, and harvesting, depending on the time of year and our linked farmer with whom you will be working. 

Since some kids from families living below the poverty line still struggle to be able to eat more than once a day, we also hope to establish community and school vegetable/fruit patches with the help of volunteers who have raised money. This will allow the kids to learn the skills while continuing their studies and benefiting from the free produce. 

Long-term volunteers will also be engaged in researching organic farming practises and products so they can advise and give recommendations to our local farmers on how they can expand and improve their businesses as well as build greenhouses to take advantage of the climate in Ghana!

Who will I be working with?

You will be working alongside one of our linked small-scale farmers from the community who rely on their work to support their family. 

After the first introduction, a member of our volunteer support team will also pay you visits at your placement site on occasion to make sure you're settling in and having an impact there.

What do we expect from a volunteer?

All we request is the passion and drive to make a difference with us, one step at a time. Being able to get involved and stuck in will help you much more with this project especially with the manual labour days which can be tiring in the heat and humidity. The greatest traits of a volunteer are enthusiasm, empathy, and the ability to adjust to alternative cultures. You will get the most of your trip by opening your mind to new experiences and beliefs whilst also bringing your own to the table.

We expect volunteers to visit their placements Monday – Friday, exceptions can be made for long weekends of travel, etc.

What can you expect from us?

We will be available to help you with your placement and trip as a whole at any time of day. If you have any questions or need any assistance, from setting up and modifying your schedule to switching your placement, there will always be someone to speak to you. To help you quickly feel at home, our team members who live in the volunteer house will also provide advice on travel arrangements and the surrounding area.

What should I bring?

Make sure you have at least one pair of sturdy shoes and full-length trousers or a tracksuit to use on the farmland if further out into the forests. Fundraising for seedlings is a great way you can ensure you can hit the ground running as soon as you arrive and make a lasting impact in our lovely communities which we know you will come to love upon arrival. 

What Happens During School Holidays?

The holidays will not directly affect this placement and the work can continue throughout the year. 
The school holidays usually fall three times a year; few weeks around easter, few weeks around August and a few weeks during December. 

• 07:30am - Volunteer transport leaves the volunteer house to project sites
• 08:00am - Arrive at project site destination and start placement work. Eg, watering and planting seedlings.
• 10:00am - 10:30am - Morning Break
• 12:30pm - 01:00pm - Lunch Break
• 03:00pm -  End of placement and start to travel back to the house to rest and meet up with the other team members.

In their free time, volunteers are free to go shopping in the local markets, return to the volunteer house or visit the local swimming pools.
