About the Placement:

French is a new addition to the curriculum in Ghana, with a focus on cultivating more French speakers due to its proximity to French-speaking West African nations. Our linked schools in rural Ghana are in need of support to provide effective French language teaching and tutoring. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in running French classes and conducting small tutoring sessions.

Many of the rural schools we are affiliated with face challenges in their French coursework, primarily due to the lack of qualified French teachers. Our initial focus is on primary classes to enable younger children to have the opportunity to learn a new language during their school years. Often, children only start learning French later in life, missing the critical early development stage when language acquisition is most effective.

What Is Included:

Your placement includes the following:

Accommodation in a modern-style house located in a scenic, semi-rural area with stunning views and proximity to local towns and the rainforest.
Coverage of house utility bills, providing you with access to a fully equipped kitchen, electricity throughout the house, and running water, which is a luxury in the Kwahu region.
Support from a local team member living in-house or nearby, ensuring that you have assistance and answers to any questions you may have.
Pre-departure support to help you prepare for your volunteer experience.

Transportation:

To reach your placement, you should budget an additional 10 - 40 Ghana cedis per day for transport costs. Most volunteers use taxis to travel to and from their placement locations, which are typically within the local community and, in some cases, slightly further out. Shared cabs in the city are affordable and convenient. Transport costs may vary between 5 cedis and 40 cedis per day, with an average of around 10 cedis. Remote village schools, located down less accessible tracks, may require a slightly higher transportation cost. We can assist you in organizing group transportation and provide information on where to find cabs and other transportation options.

Role and responsibility

You may be paired up with a teacher to start as a teaching assistant or you may be given a class to teach yourself based on your experience and confidence after you have chosen a school and relayed what you feel comfortable with. Although the idea of having your own class may initially seem intimidating, the children's sheer enthusiasm and desire to learn will be a great push to spur you forward on the way.

While younger children typically need to learn the fundamentals of reading, writing, and phonics, older children typically need to learn to increase their vocabulary and the fundamentals of French language. Talking to the kids on a daily basis is a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange since it exposes them to new ideas and accents, which helps them become more proficient in using French. The volunteer house's storeroom contains a wide variety of instructional materials, and we encourage volunteers to use their free evenings and weekends to arrange the courses for the upcoming days.

Who will I be working with?

If the number permits, we try to put volunteers in groups at a certain project or school. When placed in the schools, you will work closely with a teacher and, if there are any problems, report to the headteacher. You will interact with our on-site coach in person when you visit the academy. A member of our team will also devote a portion of their day to the project in order to offer support in any form and if necessary.

Majority of volunteers develop close relationships with the teachers and are treated like regular employees. Early on, as a way of saying thank you, it is not unusual to be invited to dinner at their homes.

What do we expect from a volunteer?

A teaching degree or prior experience is not required for this placement; instead, the team and you will discuss this during your initial meeting to determine what level of students would be most suited based on your expertise and confidence. The greatest traits of a volunteer are enthusiasm, empathy, and the ability to adjust to alternative cultures. You will get the most of your trip by opening your mind to new experiences and beliefs whilst also bringing your own to the table.

We expect volunteers to visit their placements Monday – Friday, exceptions can be made for long weekends of travel, etc.

What can you expect from us?

We will be available to help you with your placement and trip as a whole at any time of day. If you have any questions or need any assistance, from setting up and modifying your schedule to switching your placement, there will always be someone to speak to you. To help you quickly feel at home, our team members who live in the volunteer house will also provide advice on travel arrangements and the surrounding area.

What should I bring?

We suggest packing a lot of school supplies, arts and crafts supplies, and some lesson plans from teaching resource websites for your placement. Although there are few resources available for purchase in the area, these will come in very handy during your placement. If you want to bring activity sheets, you can get them inexpensively photocopied here for all students as well as basic pens, pencils, and paper.

What Happens During School Holidays?

During school holidays if a volunteer's placement falls within these dates then we can arrange either a holiday school depending on the number of volunteers or we can run sports clubs and competitions for the local children at one of the fields in town.
The school holidays usually fall three times a year; few weeks around easter, few weeks around August and a few weeks during December.

After school, volunteers are free to go shopping in the local markets, return to the volunteer house or visit the local swimming pools.

We currently have 2 x 3 bedroom volunteer houses located in the peaceful town of Pepease overlooking the rainforest. Later in the year, we aim to move to a larger 13-bedroom house in a nearby town.

Bedrooms –

Bedrooms are shared usually between 2 – 4 people. Most bedrooms are medium size and come with a mix of single, double, or bunk beds. All doors and windows in the house are covered by mosquito netting or covered completely however you are more than welcome to bring a mosquito net for your bed although usually not necessary.

Bathrooms –

There are 3 shared bathrooms in the house so offer plenty of space and privacy during your stay. Most of the time we have the benefit of running water which is a local luxury so showers and toilets will work as usual. We ask you to consider others when using water as it’s a valuable commodity in Ghana.

Kitchen –

We have one large kitchen with modern facilities such as a gas stove, fridge freezer, and a range of utensils. It is a self-catered placement however plenty of food stuffs can be bought from the market such as bread, rice, pasta, and many fresh ingredients. We also have connections with local people in the town who will be able to prepare your meals or teach you how to cook local dishes.

Living Room –

There is a large living room with sofas, TV, and a dining set for use by the volunteers. Evenings are often spent in here and volunteers are welcome to bring DVDs or memory drives with movies to watch although local television channels are provided.

Garden –

Surrounding the house is a fenced garden, this offers privacy for relaxing in the sun or sitting out in the evenings. There is also a washing line space for volunteers to use.

Store Room –

We have a small storeroom where we keep leftover teaching materials and resources for new volunteers to use. You are invited to leave any items you may not use here for the next person to continue the flow. Master copies of activity sheets or lesson plans are a key item we hope to see
keep growing in the store.

This is a self-catering placement so you are provided in the house with a kitchen with basic items to cook at home. You can easily buy fresh ingredients and drinking water from the local market in town. There are also street food sellers and cheap restaurants providing local and western cuisine for when you’ve had a long day.

This placement is available throughout the year. You are welcome to arrive with us any day of the week or flight arrival time and we will adjust your airport collection accordingly.

How Do I Get From The Airport to Volunteer House On Arrival?

We can arrange for one of our vehicles to collect you from the airport and bring you directly to the volunteer house although fuel, airport parking, and toll fees must be covered by yourself - payable in US dollars or Ghana cedi on the day. (As of June 2022 this is around 500 cedi | You will be shown the costs for transparency as it's completely not for profit).

We will arrange this as standard procedure unless you choose to OPT OUT as we would feel much more comfortable with you arriving into a new country where the team is on hand to greet you and reliable vehicles made available for you and your luggage.

Upon arrival our Volunteer Support and Driver (Frank & Eben) will meet you outside the arrivals hall at Kotoka Intl. Airport. They will be holding a sign with your name on so they should be easy to spot!

Please note that the above-shown program fees are only estimated. Volunteering Tourism will let you know about the final price during your application process.

Deposit (15%)

The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.

Final Payment (85%)

Your final payment will be agreed with Volunteering Tourism during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
