Climate Action Life Below Water

This program is ideal for

Individuals who have a deep love for the ocean and a strong commitment to environmental conservation. Volunteers who would love to participate in this program should have a passion for marine life and the environment, a desire to contribute to the protection of the marine ecosystem, a willingness to learn about marine conservation and share that knowledge with the local community and a sense of responsibility towards preserving biodiversity and marine resources. They are adventurous, environmentally conscious, and motivated to make a positive impact on the ocean and its future.

Are you passionate about marine conservation and looking for a unique volunteer opportunity in Barcelona? Barcelona, a city steeped in its relationship with the sea, provides a thrilling opportunity to create a tangible difference in the marine ecosystem of Catalonia and the Mediterranean Sea. By becoming a committed volunteer for Ocean Conservation, you can actively contribute to the fight against the detrimental consequences of urban marine waste on our coastal seabed and marine species.

Barcelona's coastline, renowned for its resources and activities, has unfortunately fallen victim to the presence of extensive marine pollution. Large amounts of urban marine waste threaten marine life and disrupt the delicate ecosystem. But you can be the change this ecosystem needs.

As a Marine Conservation volunteer, you'll have the chance to join a non-profit diving club and engage in projects with significant social and environmental impacts. Your efforts will support underwater conservation initiatives and contribute to the reduction of ocean pollution. Your daily tasks may include:

  1. Cleaning up the seabed to remove marine debris, equipped with diving gear and nets.
  2. Recording information about items and trash collected.
  3. Safely returning marine living organisms to the sea from the collected debris.
  4. Documenting and collecting data on the fauna in a biodiverse area as part of a scientific research project.
  5. Gaining a deeper understanding of the marine ecosystem, learning how to protect it, and documenting biodiversity in an ecosystem formed through the natural colonization of a former dismantled thermal power plant.

If you choose to volunteer during the summer, you might also have the opportunity to assist with summer camps for kids at risk of marginalization. This may involve supporting their dives or leading workshops on marine life and environmental conservation.

Worried about your diving experience? Don't be! This program welcomes volunteers with any or no diving experience. The Program Fee covers all necessary training, full scuba equipment, and supervision by experienced dive instructors. Moreover, you'll earn internationally recognized CMAS (World Underwater Federation) diving certifications tailored to your current experience and length of stay. The project collaborates with a local diving club, ensuring you'll always have the guidance of an experienced dive instructor.

If you already hold dive certifications, please include them in your application. You'll need to send a copy of your certifications and diving logbook to our local team in Barcelona before your starting date. All volunteers must also provide a medical certificate confirming their fitness for diving.

You might not dive in the open ocean if you're a novice diver with little experience and you're only going to be here for a week. On the other hand, you'll have plenty of time to finish your certification and obtain useful marine conservation experience.
