Why Choose Our Reforestation Placement?

Ghana is experiencing the adverse effects of climate change, with unpredictable seasons and forested areas gradually giving way to savannah and desert landscapes. The diversity and abundance of indigenous species in once-thriving rainforests have been significantly affected. We have adopted the Miyakawi method, a proven strategy that involves planting diverse native species in close proximity, fostering early-stage food and shelter for wildlife and attracting local pollinators.

Unlike traditional forest regeneration methods that may take up to 200 years, Miyawaki forests can develop into fully functional ecosystems in under 20 years. Our previous efforts have concentrated on non-indigenous trees for economic reasons, benefiting local farmers. However, we have learned from Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki's research that native vegetation, coexisting and thriving, creates resilient ecosystems.

Reforestation is pivotal in global efforts to limit the rise in temperatures to 1.5℃, and we're dedicated to this mission. Mature forests of native species are more effective at sequestering carbon compared to monocultures.

Getting to the Placement

Budget an additional 30 - 70 Ghana cedis per day for transport costs. We work with various project sites in the local community and slightly further out in rural areas. Volunteers typically use taxis for transportation, and in the city, shared cabs are convenient and affordable. Transport costs range from 5 to 40 cedis a day, with an average of about 10 cedis. Remote village sites may incur slightly higher costs due to their location. We'll assist in organizing transportation and provide guidance on local options.
